There are around 35,000 to 40,000 patients in city who have suffered by schizophrenia. The number may be much higher because most of patients don’t want to come out in open because of shame of illness. The Schizophrenia Awareness Association (SAA) has provided all the information regarding to the disease and going to plan to celebrate the World Schizophrenia Day on May 24.
According to SAA there may be one in every 100 people suffering from schizophrenia. The association is working for awareness of the disease from 1997. While there is need to clear the shame about the illness. Yeshwant Oak, member of the association said that the association has made Marathi movie named Devrai picking subject of this disease that gain much response.
G Kundapurkar another member of association said that it is mental disorder and is not possible to cure the person completely but can be controlled. SAA has organized an interview on May 24 in the city with psychiatrist Ajay Chauhan, superintendent of Ahemdabad mental hospital.
The SAA has a one daycare center at Dhyari where they keep the patients engaged with the activities such as music, yoga and gardening. Around 50 people can accommodate there at a time.
